Sheffield United’s chances of signing Ben Godfrey could be scuppered by Leeds, who are apparently in talks for the defender.

Godfrey has emerged as a target for United ahead of the transfer window closing next week.

The Everton defender is not quite in Sean Dyche’s first-team plans but has played a minimal role as part of the squad in general.

However, while the Blades might fancy taking Godfrey off Everton’s hands, it is Leeds who could end up winning the race.

Leeds United open talks to sign Ben Godfrey

According to a report from Football Transfers today, Leeds have now moved to land Godfrey and are in talks over a potential loan deal for the England international.

Reports in December had suggested Everton valued Godfrey around the £20m mark, meaning any deal for Leeds or Sheffield United this month will need to be a loan.

Godfrey moved to Goodison Park from Norwich but has not quite kicked on as many expected.

The defender is not the only Everton player Sheffield United are looking at either.

Mason Holgate remains a target and could see his loan from Southampton cut short to make the move to Bramall Lane.

United are also close to signing Ivo Grbic from Atletico Madrid.
