Sheffield United have seen a move for Everton defender Mason Holgate fall through at the last minute.

Holgate has been a long-standing target for United but ended up moving to Southampton in the summer.

However, he has not featured as he’d have liked for Russell Martin’s side and could now be on the move again during the current window.

And according to PA News journalist Nick Mashiter, a move to Sheffield United has fallen through thanks to a late demand from Everton.

Taking to his social media platform on X, Mashiter has confirmed that Holgate was on his way over for a medical, only for the Toffees to demand a fee late in the day and scupper the deal.

Sheffield United see move for Mason Holgate falter

We seem to have been linked with a move for Mason Holgate for the last few windows but it looks like the club had actually finally made their move.

However, in all honesty, if it has fallen through, then it’s not the end of the world.

In our view, using our final domestic loan signing to bring in Holgate would have been more than underwhelming.

Chris Wilder obviously knows what he needs and what he’s doing and there’s continued speculation over Anel Ahmedhodzic, which could have influenced this.

However, we’re still hoping the final loan is used on a more attacking player. Holgate is a fine stop gap if he’s fit, but overall, it would have been an underwhelming capture.
