Sheffield United club name

Sheffield United have used one name throughout the football club’s existence. A raft of members of the Sheffield United Cricket Club established the team as an offshoot of the cricket outfit in 1889. So, they also elected to carry over their team’s moniker when deciding on the club’s potential name.

While the side’s nickname of the Blades originated from the city of Sheffield’s history in the production of cutlery. The once-thriving industry also occurred beside their stadium, Bramall Lane. But Sheffield United had originally adopted the Cutlers as their club nickname from their formation through to 1912.

A selection of members of the Sheffield United Cricket Club founded Sheffield United in 1889 as an offshoot of the cricket club. The collective led by the president of the cricket club, Sir Charles Clegg, convened at the Adelphi Hotel that March to discuss establishing a football team to generate funds.

Sheffield United adopted Bramall Lane as their home stadium from the club’s formation back in 1889. Yorkshire County Cricket Club had already called the stadium their home since 1855 and continued to do so up to 1893. The ground had also first opened its doors in 1855 to be used for the cricket club.

Sheffield United training ground

Richard Caborn, as then Minister for Sport, opened Sheffield United’s training ground in 2002. It is located in the suburb of Shirecliffe and has adopted the name Randox Health Academy since October 2021 due to sponsorship. The Blades’ complex is also referred to as Shirecliffe owing to its location.

Bramall Lane chiefs re-hired Chris Wilder as the manager of Sheffield United in December 2023 to replace Paul Heckingbottom. He was earlier in charge of the Blades from May 2016 to March 2021 and took them from League One to promotion into the Premier League.
