Basham and Bogle next back from injury for Sheffield United and date for return

Chris Basham and Jayden Bogle will be the next players back from injury for Sheffield United.

The duo are among five defenders currently out for the Blades, while Phil Jagielka is suspended for Saturday’s game with Southampton after being sent off against Aston Villa.

Sander Berge and Jack Rodwell are also side-lined for United, who have experienced significant fitness problems this season.

Manager Chris Wilder says from his entire first team squad, only three players haven’t missed game time in 2020/21 due to “issues”. As well as injuries, that includes Jagielka and Billy Sharp being absent due to Covid-19.

Wilder is currently without his entire preferred back three of Basham, John Egan and Jack O’Connell.

However, that was also the case for the 1-0 win over Villa on Wednesday night and the Blades kept only their second clean sheet in the league this term.

Adding Basham and Bogle back to his defensive options will be a real bonus for Wilder. Although the game with the Saints will come too soon.

“Both the players will be missing for tomorrow, so that’s obviously a situation we’ll have to deal with and get through,” the United boss told BBC Radio Sheffield.

Luckily for Wilder, he won’t have to wait too long to add the pair back into his ranks.

“Hopefully the two boys will be in contention for next weekend’s game at Leicester and definitely the last game before the international break against Chelsea in the cup,” the 53-year-old continued.

“So fingers crossed we can get a couple back. It’s been a difficult period for us, but one we have to adjust and adapt to.”

Without Basham and Bogle and with Jagielka suspended, Wilder has a bit of selection headache in defence.

Along with Egan and O’Connell, fellow centre-back Jack Robinson is also injured.

It leaves Wilder with only Ethan Ampadu and Kean Bryan as natural options. With Rodwell out too, the only other potential alternative is Enda Stevens.

Stevens is generally preferred at wing-back, but has played in the back three for the Blades in the past.
