Sutton, who was commentating on the game for BT Sport, paid tribute to the heroic and battling display United put in throughout. The former Celtic signing referenced ‘bodies on the line’ a number of times, as the Blades rolled back the clock to see off the Villans.

And taking to Twitter following the game, Sutton insisted he was delighted for Wilder and United on a deserved win.

The Blades, without their entire first-choice back three and with other key squad players out, battled hard all evening.

To add to the task, Phil Jagielka was harshly sent off in the second half.

But, in a throwback to some of last season’s performances, the likes of Kean Bryan, Ollie Norwood, and in particular, John Fleck, stepped up to the plate to see United over the line.

At the top of the pitch, David McGoldrick was also in fine form.

Sutton praises United and Wilder, and rightly so

Despite venting his frustrations at Oliver Burke, it was clear that Sutton was suitably impressed with United’s efforts last night.

Some of the last ditch defending was brilliant and certain individuals showed exactly why they’ve become such big crowd favourites over recent seasons.

The Blades might well go down, but on last night’s effort and performance level, they’ll win a few more games before the season’s out and come back firing on all cylinders in the Championship if necessary.
