Aston Villa are looking to beat Sheffield United to yet another of their transfer targets, with Football Insider claiming they’re now interested in Matty Cash.
The Blades have already had a £10m offer for Cash rejected this window, with Forest holding out for £15m. Fulham and West Ham United are also believed to be keeping tabs on the right-back.
Yet Bramall Lane looks set to be the most likely destination for Cash, who wants to be playing top flight football next season. It’s something he can’t achieve at the City Ground. This is after the Reds missed out on the Championship playoffs on the final day of the 2019/20 campaign.
Apparently the 23-year-old is keen on a switch to South Yorkshire to work under Chris Wilder.
Wilder is targeting a new right-sided defender to act as competition for George Baldock. Cash’s versatility means he can also play in midfield as well.
Matty Cash just the latest target Aston Villa have ambushed
It is becoming a running theme this summer, that when the Blades identify a player they want to sign, Villa join the race shortly after.
There is Ollie Watkins, who is expected to leave Brentford after they missed out on promotion. With their superior wealth, the Villans look likely to beat Sheff United to Watkins by meeting his £25m valuation.
Then there was Aaron Ramsdale, whom has rejoined the Blades in an £18.5m deal from Bournemouth. But before that was finalised, the Birmingham side supposedly tried to hijack the transfer.
Now they are ready to compete for Cash. The full-back is one of Wilder’s priority targets to sign before the new season starts on September 14. This is as well as a new striker and central midfielder – with Reading’s John Swift being lined up in the latter position.
Whomever emerges next on the wish list, though, will probably be wanted by Villa soon after.
