It’s common knowledge among Sheffield United fans that Chris Wilder is looking to bring in two players on loan during January.
For months the Blades have lamented the lack of a left-sided central defender, while the lack of a creative midfielder has also been high on the agenda for a lot of supporters.
A number of names have been linked. Omar Colley and Ben Davies among the defenders to be put forward by some reports. In midfield, Jesse Lingard is the stand out name being touted, while summer target John Swift is also in the frame again.
But last night’s win over Newcastle, coupled with emerging reports today, could well change Chris Wilder’s plans entirely.
My Revenge On Ben Foster
Ampadu, O’Connell, and Lingard could dictate
For the first time this season we had a player in the position of O’Connell who looked comfortable. Ethan Ampadu was a class above, marshalling the left side brilliantly and showing composure in possession too.
His performance, coupled with Chris Wilder hinting that O’Connell could actually be back for February, could well ensure the Blades don’t actually move into the market for a defender.
In regards to Lingard, while there is no doubting his ability and the impact he could have on the team in an attacking sense, reports today claim the Man United man doesn’t fancy a relegation battle.
If that is the case, then, frankly, United should just move on in the market and look for someone else. We don’t need someone not having the stomach for the fight, regardless of talent.
Ampadu’s performance, the return of O’Connell, and Lingard’s apparent unwillingness to join could well mean Wilder shuffles his plans around somewhat.
