Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder appeared to drop a major update on Jack O’Connell’s return to the picture last night, following the win over Newcastle.
United have struggled massively with the loss of O’Connell, with a number of players trying to fill the void with varying degrees of success.
However, Ethan Ampadu played well last night in the position and speaking after the game, Wilder seemed to confirm we could be seeing O’Connell back sooner than expected.
“George and Enda will be back for the weekend, so they’re two” Wilder said.
“Obviously Sander and Jack. Sander is March, Jack around the middle of February.”
The news around O’Connell would be a huge boost to proceedings for United and Wilder, who had initially expected to see the defender miss the entire season.
However, a return in February could see O’Connell back for around a dozen or so games, which is more than enough time to make an impact on proceedings in terms of results.
It remains to be seen whether that will also influence Wilder in this month’s window, especially given Ethan Ampadu put in a fine display last night in that very position.
Huge news for everyone if correct
Wilder doesn’t normally give much away but he was pretty direct in his answers here and seemed to just give straight up information.
Getting O’Connell back in the mix is huge for the squad, the confidence, and supporters. We’ve never quite replaced him, so getting him back ASAP is crucial.
Hopefully, with a bit of luck in terms of results and these players returning, we could at least be in for a decent looking end to the season.
