Sheffield United are facing a battle with Championship newboys Southampton in the race to sign Everton’s Mason Holgate.
Holgate was one of the first names mentioned this summer in relation to United. Indeed, there’s even been reports of exploratory talks being held between the Blades and Holgate.
However, he remains an Everton player for now, albeit he has been omitted from the Toffees’ first-team squad for pre-season.
And according to The Daily Mail, United could now have to overcome Southampton if they want to sign Holgate.

The Mail claims that the Saints have held discussions with Holgate and Everton over a move. Despite being relegated, the south coast outfit have years of Premier League money behind them and are in a good position to offer big wages.
For United, the issue with Holgate will come down to money. The Blades will be conscious of using one of their Premier League loan spots on a defender, while a permanent deal would rely on a fee and decent wages being agreed.
United are also looknig at Holgate’s Everton teammate, Neal Maupay. The Blades are also expected to sign both Anis Slimane and Benie Traore this week.
Sheffield United News View: Move on if the deal isn’t right
Mason Holgate – lauded for his ‘no-nonsense‘ approach by Alan Shearer – would be a decent enough signing for United but at the same time, he isn’t one worth spending all our time and resources on.
We do need another defender in the squad and his PL experience would be useful. However, like with Maupay, the idea of using a loan slot on him doesn’t sit brilliantly.
The use of the two loans is going to be a big decision by Paul Heckingbottom. And if Holgate has other interest and money on the table, then it might be worth moving on.
