Sheffield United are edging ever nearer to a deal for Everton defender Mason Holgate, with the player due in Sheffield for a medical.

Holgate is set to sign for United after terms were agreed between the Blades and Everton over wages and any potential loan fee. As reported around 30 minutes ago on our website.

And now, building on those reports, Sky Sports journalist Tim Thornton has said Holgate is indeed on his way to Sheffield for a medical and will sign for the Blades before the deadline.

Chris Wilder has been desperate to get a new defender in and it seems he has got his man finally.

A number of other players had also been linked with a move but Holgate has been on Wilder’s radar ever since he was in charge initially.

If signed, Holgate will likely go straight into the team to face Aston Villa this weekend.

Straight into the starting XI

Wilder has said all window that any signings are being made to improve the first-team and Mason Holgate will probably go straight in.

United’s defence has been woeful this season so it can’t get much worse really.

Hopefully, Holgate feels he has a point to prove and will make the step into the team seamlessly.
