Sheffield United are close to signing Everton defender Mason Holgate as Chris Wilder looks to have finally got his man.

Holgate has been linked with a move to the Blades all window and looks finally set to agree on a deal to come to Bramall Lane for the last few months of the campaign.

Holgate, who Everton previously valued around the £14m mark, has been with Southampton this season but has failed to make an impression.

Now due back at Everton, Alan Nixon reports via his Patreon account that the Blades and Everton are close to coming to an agreement over wages and terms of the loan deal.

Holgate’s signing will bring an end to Chris Wilder’s pursuit of a new defender this month. The Blades boss has been keen to add a right-footed centre-back, with an eye perhaps on returning to his favoured 3-5-2 formation.

Better than nothing

Holgate has probably had a bit of a rough time from some and looking at some Blades fans on social media, you’d think they are experts in all aspects of the defender’s game.

However, a signing at right centre-back is better than nothing and we have been so poor at the back that a new face was needed.

Holgate comes with Premier League experience and perhaps a point to prove as well. A loan deal is not doing any harm and it gives Wilder the added option at the back.
