Sheffield United will complete the signing of Anel Ahmedhodzic this week after fending off late interest from Blackburn Rovers this weekend.

Ahmedhodzic is expected to join the Blades in a £3m deal to become the first money-spent signing of the summer, following Adam Davies’ decision to sign a two-year contract last week.

According to respected journalist Alan Nixon, United have fended off several late attempts from Blackburn to win the race for Ahmedhodzic. The defender is now expected in Sheffield this week to complete a medical and will then fly out to Portugal to join up with his teammates in pre-season. The Blades squad flew out last night to ramp up their new season preparations.

United are also hoping to add Tommy Doyle to their pre-season tour, while Tom Lawrence is also said to be on Paul Heckingbottom’s list of targets.

The signing of Ahmedhodzic will come as a surprise to some Blades fans. Heckingbottom had already said the main market was loans and frees this summer. A £3m spend on an international defender, then, will go down well with the Bramall Lane faithful.

Our View: Board Deserve Credit For Ahmedhodzic Signing

This current Sheffield United board will always split the fans. But for this, they deserve some credit and are backing up the words of Stephen Bettis, who promised the club would spend this summer.

United needed a defender in the building and it doesn’t come much better than a full international who was being watched by the likes of AC Milan.

With a bit of luck, this deal now gets pushed and completed and we can see Ahmedhodzic in action in Portugal.
