Report: Sheffield United hope to have 'exciting' new signing in place for pre-season tour tomorrow

Sheffield United are hoping to have a new face on the plane to Portugal tomorrow, with a deal for Manchester City’s Tommy Doyle edging closer.

Reports over the last few days have sprung up to suggest a deal to bring Doyle to Bramall Lane is close. Paul Heckingbottom is wanting the Man City starlet to come in and help his midfield, and now Yorkshire Live has claimed a deal is closer than ever.

Indeed, so close is the deal to being done that YL claims United were hoping Doyle could even be on the plane to Portugal which was due to depart today. Whether or not United hit that target remains to be seen, although no announcement from the club suggests not everything is quite confirmed.

However, given the local and national media coverage of the deal, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see Doyle rock up in Portugal this week.

United are ready to step up their pre-season training with some warm weather training and friendly games, with the season now just a month away. The Blades are also chasing a deal for Tottenham’s Jack Clarke.

Our View: Doyle The Ideal Young Player To Arrive At Sheffield United

If he’s good enough for Kyle Walker, then he’ll be good enough for a lot of Sheffield United fans. The former Blades star has lauded Doyle, declaring him an ‘exciting talent’ who has his head firmly on his shoulders.

United needed to make moves for a midfielder or two this summer. Doyle will fill the void nicely, and can play deeper or in a more advanced role if required. He’s highly-rated by Pep Guardiola, too, which is another string to his bow.

Hopefully, this one gets announced and United can have their first summer signing in the bag.
