Sheffield United are ready to make a move for Middlesbrough hotshot Chuba Akpom, as they look to replace Iliman Ndiaye.

Akpom was outstanding in the Championship last season as Middlesbrough enjoyed a fine season. Akpom rattled in 29 goals in all competitions, including one at Bramall Lane in a 3-1 win for Michael Carrick’s side.

However, Akpom is into the final 12 months of his contract and according to Alan Nixon, United are making their move.

Nixon writes on his Patreon how United are willing to pay £8m for Akpom. Boro do not want to sell but know they could be forced into the issue, with no new contract looking close.

The Blades are looking to get the deal done quickly and want Akpom in the door before the opener with Crystal Palace in a week’s time.

Akpom, 27, shone for the Arsenal academy before never quite getting his chance at first-team level. He enjoyed a fine spell in Greece before making the move to Boro and shining under Michael Carrick.

Paul Heckingbottom is desperate to add new faces after losing Ndiaye. The Blades have signed Auston Trusty today, but the Blades gaffer wants up to six new faces.

Sheffield United News View: Could be the ideal signing

There are arguments to say that Chuba Akpom has a lot to prove but he had such a good season last term that he might be a brilliant signing.

United need a player who can drop into that number ten role and Akpom excelled for Middlesbrough in doing that last season.

At £8m, it takes a chunk of United’s budget but with £20m banked from Ndiaye, it has to be spent.

29 goals last season says it all and if Akpom can continue that in the Premier League, then United would be getting themselves a top player.
