It’s getting into what some regard as ‘silly season’ and it looks like Sheffield United are not getting off lightly when it comes to the bizarre rumours.

The Blades have yet to sign anyone this summer and with a modest budget of just £20m, big-name signings are not expected.

However, that’s not stopped a number of names being linked. And after the more realistic rumour of Anis Slimane being a player of interest, Italian outlet Il Tirreno has gone all out in linking us with Argentinian midfielder, Nicolas Gonzalez.

According to Il Tirreno, the Blades are watching Gonzalez, who is also of interest to Brighton. Gonzalez signed for La Viola last year after being linked with a move to Tottenham.

Not that we are ones to talk down rumours or suggest someone is wrong in their work, but nothing about this one adds up at all.

First off, Fiorentina rejected bids of around £25m for Gonzalez from Leicester as recently as January. From there, he’s gone on to star for the Italian side, helping them to the Europa Conference League finals.

The report from Italy goes on to claim that Fiorentina aren’t worried about losing Gonzalez unless a bid of more than what Leicester offered comes in. Immediately, that puts United out of the running.

Of course, in a dream situation, this would be a remarkable signing. A full Argentinian international with experience at the top level in Europe is perfect.

Sure, the Blades might have him on a long list of players they’ve looked at. But right now, this one isn’t happening.
