Report: Sheffield United keen on signing Leroy Fer

Sheffield United a plotting a January move to sign Dutch international midfielder, Leroy Fer, as the Blades look to strengthen their promotion push.

Fer is currently playing his football in Turkey with Alanyaspor. However, he is out of contract in the summer of 2023 and according to Alan Nixon, the Blades are keen.

The respected journalist writes on his Patreon how Fer is a target for United manager Paul Heckingbottom. It comes as Sander Berge is struggling with injury once again.

Fer, now 32, enjoyed a solid spell in England with Swansea City and is big friends with current United striker, Oli McBurnie. Indeed, the image released by Getty Images here shows McBurnie holding Fer’s son on a lap around the pitch.

The Dutchman’s experience could be valuable for United and Heckingbottom in the run-in. With midfield options light right now, Fer has plenty to offer.

He’s won 11 caps for Holland, made over 250 appearances in the Eredivisie and enjoyed spells in Britain with Swansea, QPR, and Norwich. Another good character, Fer has captained clubs he’s been at as well.

If he is available for next to nothing and willing to come in on a short-term deal with the idea a longer deal might be offered, then Fer would be a smart addition.

United will need someone in January. Despite doing so well this season, the injury situation has decimated proceedings and it’s hard to imagine more won’t be struck down in the future.

Fer seems like a sensible option, then. At 32, he’s not going to have any sort of resale value. But his quality and experience could help United over the line to promotion. And right now, that’s all that really matters for this Sheffield United squad.
