Sheffield United keen on Scottish international midfielder

Sheffield United are keen on signing out of contract midfielder, James McArthur, as Paul Heckingbottom looks to strengthen the Blades’ ranks.

United released their retained list yesterday as club stalwarts like Billy Sharp, Enda Stevens and Jack O’Connell were all confirmed as departing.

That has left some wiggle room to play with when it comes to wages. And according to TeamTalk, United are keen on former Palace star McArthur.

TeamTalk reports that United and Luton are both keen on signing the Scottish international.

McArthur, 35, has left Palace after nearly a decade and more than 200 appearances for the Eagles. He was signed from Wigan and has since established himself as a Premier League midfielder.

With United’s budget looking limited this summer after a takeover attempt from Dozy Mmobuosi hit the buffers, free transfers and loans are looking likely.

However, McArthur’s age could count against him. Prince Abdullah recently explained how he wanted younger players signed who could come into the first-team. At 35, the Scot is way out of line when it comes to the Prince’s plans.

Sheff U News View: Experience can help but it has to be the right player

There’s no doubting McArthur’s credentials as a PL player. His stats tell you that he is more than established and comfortable at this level and you can see why United and Luton would take a look.

However, at 35, he won’t have too much left in the tank and if this was a deal we did, it would have to be a short-term option. United do need a couple of midfielders but there’s an argument to say we need players who are a bit more dynamic than McArthur.

That, plus the fact Prince Abdullah outlined our ideal plan, makes this one seem unlikely for now.

Heckingbottom might fancy a few experienced heads around the place though. And if that is the case, then we simply have to trust the gaffer’s decision making.
