It’s getting towards the summer months when transfer talk is rife and Sheffield United are already being linked with a move for Joe Rothwell.
The Blackburn Rovers midfielder is out of contract this summer and free to leave. Rovers enjoyed a stellar opening few months of the season but slipped away from the playoff race eventually. And according to The Athletic’s Michael Walker, Rothwell is wanted by a host of clubs, including Sheffield United.
Tony Mowbray is also expected to leave the club, while other key players such as Ben Brereton-Diaz will also be sold on, per The Athletic.
Rothwell, 27, came through the Manchester United youth ranks but never quite got going at Old Trafford. However, after doing well at Oxford, Rothwell has gone on to make over 160 appearances for Blackburn. Capable of playing in a number of midfield positions, Rothwell’s versatility makes him an enticing prospect at Championship level.

The Blades are also said to be monitoring Jake Clarke-Salter of Chelsea. The defender has enjoyed a fine loan spell with Coventry City, and is also set to be available for nothing this summer.
Our View: Joe Rothwell Would Fit In Nicely At Sheffield United
The names of Rothwell and Clarke-Salter are the sort of players United fans will be happy to be linked with.
We mentioned earlier how Clarke-Salter would be a good signing if we go up or stay down. And you have to say, Joe Rothwell would be in the same boat. He’s more than proven himself at Championship level and while he might not be a player to take us to the next level in the league above, he’d be good in the squad.
Described by local Blackburn journalists as a ‘mesmerising’ talent with the ball at his feet, Rothwell would certainly be a welcomed freebie at Bramall Lane this summer.
