Sheffield United are being linked with a move for Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford as they look to strengthen the ranks.

The Blades are starting to be credited with interest in a number of players and according to reports this weekend, Trafford is a player of interest.

The Sun’s Alan Nixon makes the claim. Writing on his Patreon account, the experienced journalist claims that United, Burnley and Middlesbrough are all keen on the Manchester City youngster.

A new goalkeeper is not a massive priority for United but it is a position being looked at if the right player becomes available.

After impressing at Bolton last year, Trafford is thought to be open to leaving City permanently and it’s claimed a bid in the region of £6m could tempt City into selling.

United, who have a modest budget heading back into the top flight, are believed to be among the clubs keen.

Of course, Wes Foderingham is the current United number one and while there is some confusion over his contract, he is widely expected to start the season in goal for Paul Heckingbottom.

Trafford’s spell with Bolton incited his manager, Ian Evatt, to sing his praises for the ‘wonderful‘ saves he makes. Evatt also believed he was the best goalkeeper in League One.

United, of course, have a good relationship with City following last season’s hugely successful double loan of Tommy Doyle and James McAtee.

Most Blades fans would probably say that if there is a top quality goalkeeper out there who we can sign, then we should do it.

But on the flip side to that, Foderingham has deserved his shot and while he might prove not quite at the level over time, Paul Heckingbottom won’t be shunning his number one any time soon.

With Trafford, it’s clear the potential is there and a season in League One has done him good. Likewise, £6m doesn’t sound too bad for a player who could stick around for years

But given United’s financial position, spending so much on a player not guaranteed to play seems a bit OTT.
