Sheffield United fans will be breathing a tad easier today after news emerged around the injury to John Egan.

Egan was withdrawn at the weekend against Everton after suffering what looked like a dual knock to both the ankle and knee.

The Blades skipper has since gone away with Ireland on international duty. However, after going for scans, it seems Egan might just be ok.

Egan is expected to captain Ireland as they look to pull off a huge result against the World Cup finalists.

The Sheffield United defender has come in for some criticism in recent weeks. However, he remains a key player for Ireland and United and any sort of injury would have been a bitter blow.

Sheffield United News View: Egan fitness boost is massive

It seems like John Egan is the man of the moment when it comes to being made a scapegoat by some at Bramall Lane.

Quite why he is being picked out so much is quite baffling but there’s not a lot Egan can do other than continuing to plough on.

Divisive opinions aside, there can be no doubt that had Egan picked up an injury then United would have been in a touch of trouble. We are woefully short of depth at centre-back and Egan being injured would have been a disaster.

With a bit of luck, he gets through the international games free from any sort of reoccurrence and can come back to S2 ready to go.

Regardless of a perceived slight dip in performance levels, John Egan remains a key player for Sheffield United.
