Messi, Ramos...and John Lundstram? Free-agent list has some serious variation

John Lundstram is officially no longer a Sheffield United player and is now on the free agent list that includes some illustrious names.

‘Lunny’ leaves Bramall Lane splitting opinion. He deserves credit for his first season in the Premier League with the Blades. His five goals from midfield were vital, and in Chris Wilder’s adapted midfield, the thrived.

But like so many last year, Lundstram completely fell apart. His performances were made worse and highlighted further by the fact he’d refused to sign a new contract. It was a saga the club could have done without in all honesty and is surely something Chris Wilder regrets.

Paul Heckingbottom stuck up for Lundstram at the back-end of the campaign. But most onlooking Blades fans recognised and saw that the United number 7 had somewhat downed tools.

My Revenge On Ben Foster

Alas, it’s not July and he’s officially left, and at the moment, doesn’t have a clue to join. Rangers and Crystal Palace have been linked, but nothing has come to fruition as yet.

Lundstram, though, is in quite some company on the latest free agent list.

A fitting end for Lord Lundstram

Obviously this is a bit tongue-in-cheek, but it’s almost quite fitting to see Lundstram included alongside such illustrious names. Per a list from, the now ex-Blade finds himself alongside the likes of Lionel Messi, Sergio Ramos, and Juan Mata in looking for a new club.

Andy Carroll’s name sneaking on there also brings a little smile to the face, while ‘Lots of Palace Players’ is another notable nod.

But with Lundstram, it’s almost fitting and amusing at the same time. Some fans felt that Lunny had this feeling he was better than he was. How true that is, is open to opinion. But at least he finds himself among some of the world’s best here, however brief that might be!

In the wider footballing world, Lundstram became known as ‘Lord Lundstram’, thanks to his fantasy football exploits.

“It’s a bit mad. All the lads have started calling me ‘Lord’ now,” Lundstram said at the time.

A fitting end, then, to see Lunny’s name in and amongst some of the world’s best as his time as a Blade draws to a close.
