Sheffield United were at their brilliant best yesterday as Paul Heckingbottom’s men simply had too much for a poor Swansea City side at Bramall Lane.
The Blades smashed three past the Swans in the opening 45 minutes as the likes of Morgan Gibbs-White, Billy Sharp, and Sander Berge caused havoc for Russell Martin’s men. It was, overall, one of the finest displays of football we have seen from United all season.
But aside from the good football and excellent finishing on display, the Blades had a work-rate and intent to press about them which is becoming synonymous with this Heckingbottom side. And according to SUTV pundit Kevin Gage, this was summed up perfectly by Chris Basham still continuing to fly at Swansea players in the 90th minute.
“It started at the front with Billy and Gibbs-White working their socks off to close people down, then into midfield with Flecky and Berge winning the ball back up high. Norwood winning his tackles, the defence squeezing up high”, Gage said on SUTV.
“Right through the team we were doing it. And we did it from the first whistle right up to the 90th minute. We saw it there, Chris Basham in the 90th minute closing someone down on the touchline. Getting thrown over the line and possibly injured. It epitomised us today, they were right at it.”
It remains to be seen if Basham, as well as the likes of George Baldock, will be fit for this week’s clash with Blackburn.
Our View: Sheffield United Showing Jokanovic Up Under Heckingbottom
The more this goes on under Hecky, the more you feel that Jokanovic just didn’t grasp what he had in front of him.
Obviously, we have moved on and it’s not always fair to keep bringing up former managers. But it has to be pointed out that this is the same group of players Jokanovic had, barring two January additions, and they are producing night and day performances.
The Blades were tremendous against Swansea. Kevin Gage is right as well, the pressing, work-rate, and all-around team effort was superb from front to back.
