Jack O’Connell has been speaking about if and when he might return from injury after missing two years for Sheffield United.
O’Connell is still under contract and has been given his usual number five squad number. However, there has been no sign of him in any of the proper pre-season sessions, albeit with sporadic appearances in the gym. Indeed, there has been some feeling from supporters that O’Connell might not even play in red and white again.
However, O’Connell insists he is working hard to come back and admitted he should be close to running again soon.
‘I’m still working hard to get back that goes without saying. It’s been a tough two years that goes without saying, you have good days and have some bad days, but I think now it’s just about taking it slow, so I don’t have any more setbacks” O’Connell said on SUTV.
“It’s lonely when you’re in the gym every day. It’s tough, I love to play football. I’m working hard every day to get back. I don’t think (there’s a timescale) no. Because I’ve done that in the past and got a bit giddy. I’m in the gym every single day, I’ve been taking some of the sessions with the injured lads. I’m not back running, but I don’t think it’s far away.
“I look at the Ipswich goal and it gives me goosebumps, it gives me motivation to get back. I know it’s been two years but I’m working hard to get back.”
Our View: Dream To See Jack O’Connell Back For Sheffield United
Any Sheffield United fan would love to see O’Connell back on the pitch. And it’s not even for selfish footballing reasons in that he is such a good player, it’s more for the fact his career has effectively been halted by injury.
To see O’Connell return in a Blades shirt would be a huge positive for everyone. In fact, even to see him return at all would be massive, even if that is with another club down the line.
O’Connells comments today are as much as we’ve ever heard really and if he sees there being a chance of making that comeback, then United fans should remain positive as well.
