Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has admitted he could be about to rest star striker, Timo Werner, after conceding he needs to find a balance for his squad.
Werner has been a more or less ever-present both in Europe and domestically this season for Chelsea. And after a slow start, he’s begun kicking into gear with some goals for the Blues.
However, speaking ahead of the clash with Sheffield United this weekend and as reported by West London Sport, Lampard has admitted the thought of dropping Werner is in his mind.
The Chelsea boss says Werner was on course for a rest against Burnley until Christian Pulisic pulled up injured.
But Lampard has admitted he needs to strike a balance between that rest and winning games. And given Chelsea are in good form with Werner leading the charge, the Blues boss might just stick with it for now.
Chris Wilder, of course, will be hoping Werner makes it a hat-trick of big names to miss out this weekend.
Kai Havertz and Christian Pulisic are already ruled out, meaning Werner’s loss would be an even bigger boost for the Blades boss as United seek their first three points of the season.
We can but hope
Not that we are taking a defeatist attitude, but seeing Havertz, Pulisic, and Werner all miss out would be a massive boost to the confidence of both fans and players.
Three world-class players not being in the XI would hinder any team. That would then transcend into the United squad, who would get a morale and sub-conscious boost by them not being there.
However, Werner will probably play, won’t he? The guy is in fine form and with Pulisic out, he’ll probably start on the left-hand side with Tammy Abraham down the middle.
