George Baldock is set to be handed a call-up to the Greece squad for their upcoming March friendlies.
The right wing-back has been in superb form for Sheffield United this season. Along with Enda Stevens on the opposite side, Baldock has become an integral cog in Chris Wilder’s expansive 3-5-2 system.
And with England boasting a wealth of talent in the full-back areas at the moment, it looks like Baldock could be set to align himself with the Greeks.
Speaking ahead of today’s visit of Norwich City, Baldock confirmed talks are underway to seal a place in the next squad.
“I think there could be a possibility. I don’t want to say too much because it’s not there yet and there’s a long way to go. There’s a lot of paperwork to go through,” Baldock told the Sheffield Star.
“If it happens, it happens and brilliant. Until then, all my focus is on Sheffield United. But yes, there’s been talks.”
Baldock will be looking to get one over on Norwich again this weekend. In the reverse fixture at Carrow Road, the Blades star scored and set up another as Chris Wilder’s men came back to win 2-1 against the Canaries.
A deserved call-up for one of the Blades’ standout performers
It’s been a remarkable rise really from Baldock. He’s gone from one of the players who some fans thought might be replaced in the summer, to a player who is one of the first names on Wilder’s teamsheet.
The call to Greece is more than deserved for the wing-back. His goals and assists and all-round attacking play have been vital for the Blades. He’s scored twice and, crucially, laid on a further three for his teammates.
George Baldock can hold his head high this season like so many United stars. A call to the international scene, then, is richly deserved.
