The unfortunate problem facing George Baldock when it comes to England

George Baldock has been one of the standout right-backs in the Premier League this season, with plenty of Blades believing an England call should be near.

As most Blades fans know, ‘right-back’ is not entirely accurate when it comes to Baldock. The former MK Dons man is as attacking as they come and has excelled in the wing-back position afforded to him by Chris Wilder.

His productivity has been good, too. He’s scored twice this season and has laid on a further four goals, proving that he can deliver when he does get into attacking areas.

With such consistency and good form comes calls for further recognition. There has, then, been a number of shouts demanding Baldock be given an England chance.

Of course, he can play for Greece if he wants. And a move into the Greek national team might be something Baldock should go for given the current crop of England players ahead of him.

Unfortunate timing

Sadly for Baldock, when it comes to being selected for England, his form comes at a time when the Three Lions are blessed with options at right-back.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has cemented his place as the best right full-back in the league. It doesn’t really matter how well Baldock plays, he won’t be getting in ahead of the Liverpool man.

Furthermore, there are other players for Gareth Southgate to select from. Kyle Walker is still playing regularly for Manchester City and Aaron Wan-Bissaka is doing well for Man United.

Even beyond those two, England has others who have been called upon previously. Kieran Trippier and the emerging Reece James are just another two names who could already have the edge over Baldock in Southgate’s eyes.

The final issue for Baldock is something the England manager has eluded to in the past.

England plays a certain system. It’s something Southgate has commented on when it comes to the likes of Jack O’Connell getting a call-up.

In fairness to Baldock, he has put himself right in the reckoning. It just appears that, up to now, there are one too many others already ahead of him in the pecking order.

Greece, then, might just be the way forward for the Blades star now.
