Report: Sheffield United could yet sign Dion Sanderson from Wolves in January

According to reports, Sheffield United might yet get their chance to land Wolves defender, Dion Sanderson, during the January transfer window.

The Blades wanted to sign Sanderson in the summer. Reports at the time claimed United were willing to pay around £2m for the young defender. However, Sanderson went on to sign for Birmingham City, where he has impressed in the first half of the season.

But Wolves have exercised their option to bring Sanderson – along with Ryan Giles – back to Molineux. The pair are expected to be back up while Bruno Lage looks to bring in his own new faces in the window. And according to The Athletic, Wolves could yet allow Sanderson and Giles to go back out on loan.

It’s claimed that Wolves will let Sanderson and Giles back out on temporary deals if they aren’t needed by Lage at first-team level. And while Birmingham and Cardiff will be favourites to take each player back, there is a suggestion other clubs will be considered.

Could Sheffield United Sign Dion Sanderson In January?

There’s certainly a need for the Blades to sign a new defender. It’s an area of the pitch we lack serious cover in and an injury to one of Davies, Basham, or Egan is going to cause problems.

Sanderson is clearly someone high on the club’s radar. He was mentioned more than once in the summer and in fairness to the defender, he has done well at Birmingham. The 22-year-old has started 14 games in the Championship for the Blues. His recall has come as a disappointment to Lee Bowyer’s side.

The Blades are unlikely to spend any sort of money in January, so a loan is the most likely to assist Paul Heckingbottom. Sanderson, on paper anyway, fits the bill perfectly. United have also enjoyed huge success with Morgan Gibbs-White. The midfielder has been the star of the show since Wolves sent him to Bramall Lane.

It will certainly be interesting to see how Sanderson’s immediate future pans out. And if it’s not with Wolves, then the Blades need to be ready and waiting to pounce.
