Sheffield United striker David McGoldrick is set to reunite with his former manager, Chris Wilder, and sign for Middlesbrough this week.

The experienced striker is leaving Sheffield United this summer after Paul Heckingbottom decided against offering him a new contract. McGoldrick had missed the final few months of the season through injury but had otherwise played a key role during his time with the club.

‘Didzy’ was signed by Wilder when United were in the Championship. He played a crucial role in helping United into the Premier League and was then seen as one of the Blades’ star players in the top flight. That opinion was held my many at Bramall Lane, despite McGoldrick’s lack of goals.

And now, according to The Sun, McGoldrick is set for a return to Championship football with Middlesbrough and former boss Wilder. It’s reported how Didzy is close to agreeing terms with Boro after spending the day at their training ground yesterday.

The 34-year-old will be hoping to defy the odds again under Wilder. He was signed by Wilder at United after being released by Ipswich Town.

Our View: Good Luck To David McGoldrick

If any player leaves Sheffield United with our best wishes, then it’s David McGoldrick. His time with United had come to a natural conclusion and it’s only right that he gets a move to another club at this level.

A move to Middlesbrough is a good one as well. They’ll be expecting to challenge up at the top with Wilder at the helm and a host of new signings in place. Clearly, the former Blades boss sees a lot in McGoldrick still and will be confident he can get the best from him again.

For United, it’s a shame to see McGoldrick move to a promotion rival. But that aside, it’s nice to see Didzy get a good, quality club as his next destination.
