Sheffield United rounded their season off with a good 1-0 win against Burnley, as David McGoldrick struck once again for the Blades.
Back in front of around 5,000 fans inside Bramall Lane, United ensured they hit the 20 goal mark for the season. They also ensured the players can go into pre-season with some confidence.
Of course, the season on the whole has been a miserable one. Relegated basically by Christmas and with Chris Wilder’s depature souring things further, it’s been a tough old campaign.
But thanks to McGoldrick and a select few others, United can head into the new season with some optimism.
Sheffield United must build around David McGoldrick
While improved performances of late from the likes of Enda Stevens, George Baldock, and Ollie Norwood have been a plus, few can deny it is McGoldrick who is the lifeblood of this team.
An admirable and inspiring individual off the field, McGoldrick has also become that on the pitch. To bag eight times this season after going so long without one last term is a testament to the man. It’s something United’s young players can learn from, too.
Aside from his goals, McGoldrick is the workhorse of the team as well. Few strikers put in the hard yards like Didzy does. Further to that, when he does get the ball, his use of it and composure is second to none.
It’s why McGoldrick, for whoever the new boss might be, should be the prime focus of the immediate future.
This Sheffield United team needs its leaders. And Didzy is certainly in that category now. At Championship level, there won’t be many better in terms of overall game and impact.
If the Blades are wanting immediate success in the Championship, then David McGoldrick is the man to build around.
