Ben Davies has slowly integrated himself into the Sheffield United set-up and played his part in a clean-sheet on Saturday against Derby County.
Currently on loan from Liverpool, Davies has been a long-term target for United and has immediately improved the defence since stepping in for the out of sorts Jack Robinson.
Davies is said to be working his way back to his very highest fitness levels following his time on the sidelines at Liverpool. But with a trip to Middlesbrough tomorrow, Davies was on media duty as he prepared for the tough trip north.
Davies covered a range of subjects in his comments today. And among them was what he feels United need to do to improve. It was no surprise, then, to see him pick up on defensive frailties.
“I think it was pleasing to see it through (against Derby). I just think we need to manage the games better if we do take the lead late on,” Davies said.
“But the Championship is never easy. Every team will cause a threat right to the end. Hopefully we can continue this upward curve we’re on but we know it’s not going to be comfortable.”
United have suffered late on in games this term. Huddersfield and Preston both scored late at Bramall Lane, while Hull even got one back themselves despite a relatively comfortable day for the Blades.
Our View: Davies is right, United need to be smarter
And that’s all it is really. The Blades need to manage the games better, use their experience and quality, and simply get over the line.
We nearly chucked it away against the Rams when Tom Lawrence hit the post so it’s definitely still something that’s in the make-up of this squad.
Over time, Jokanovic can hopefully iron it out. Indeed, with Ben Davies in the defence, things should improve for Sheffield United.
