'Best display of the season' - Garth Crooks on Sheffield United as John Egan makes team of the week

Garth Crooks says Sheffield United put in their “best display of the season” at Everton as he names John Egan in his team of the week.

Egan helped the already relegated Blades to only a sixth Premier League win of 2020/21 at Goodison Park.

The 1-0 victory was also just the fourth top flight clean sheet of the campaign for United.

Teenager Daniel Jebbison scored the only goal of the game. Yet it was Egan who Crooks was most impressed with.

“Was I watching the same team? At Everton on Sunday, this was the Sheffield United I saw perform so impressively in the Premier League last season under Chris Wilder and not the team that has just been relegated,” the pundit wrote in his BBC Sport column.

“The Blades have been missing in action for the past nine months but produced their best display of the season when all was lost. For a relegated side, this was one hell of a performance.

“Chris Basham and John Egan in particular were outstanding with a very willing runner up front in 17-year-old Daniel Jebbison.”

Considering the Blades have known their fate for some time after securing the earliest ever relegation from the Premier League, this was a refreshing performance.

In Jebbison they clearly have a bright prospect. But the rest of the squad are showing some mettle ahead of their return to the Championship.

It’s now two wins in their last four matches after also beating Brighton & Hove Albion by the same score-line.

With Newcastle United and Burnley coming up in their final two games, there is a chance to pick up more points.

Which could provide exactly the morale boost needed ahead of a return to the second tier of English football.

It’s been a sorry season overall, with Chris Wilder also leaving Bramall Lane.

Yet with a new manager set to be appointed imminently, finally there is something positive to hold onto.
