Sheffield United reportedly made move for Manchester United defender Brandon Williams

Sheffield United made an approach for Manchester United defender Brandon Williams this month.

That’s according to Football Insider, who claim the Blades were interested in Williams and Man United teammate Jesse Lingard.

There has been lots written and spoken about a potential move for Lingard during the January transfer window.

It’s something that now appears to have gone cold, with the Blades owner now deciding there will be no incoming or outgoing transfers in January.

There had also been rumours that the South Yorkshire club were considering another unwanted Red Devils man in Marcos Rojo.

Yet interest in Williams hasn’t been as widely covered and suggests a slightly different approach from Chris Wilder.

Does Brandon Williams move suggest concerns at wing-back?

Williams is a left-back who has come through the youth ranks at Old Trafford to break into the first team last season.

The 20-year-old played 36 times in 2019/20, but has only made six appearances this time around.

Both Luke Shaw and Alex Telles are ahead of Williams in the pecking order, but the youngster is clearly considered a potential future star at Man United.

However, the Blades showing interest in the England Under-21 international suggests concerns on the left flank.

If Williams had moved to Bramall Lane, he would surely have been in contention to play at wing-back.

Until this campaign, it’s a position that Enda Stevens has made his own. Yet this term, partly due to injuries, that has slightly changed.

Stevens is still first choice, but both Max Lowe and Ben Osborn have also featured in the role in 2020/21.

In truth, none have really impressed. Which is perhaps why Wilder was considering bringing in another option.

If Williams had signed, it could also have allowed Stevens to drop into central defence.

The left side of the back three has been another problem area this season because of Jack O’Connell being out.

Ethan Ampadu now looks to have settled into the role, but he is one of seven players to have featured there already this campaign.
