If Henderson doesn't return to Sheffield United perhaps they should try and re-sign Ramsdale

If Sheffield United can’t bring back Dean Henderson for next season, perhaps they should try and re-sign Aaron Ramsdale.

Henderson is currently midway through his second successive campaign on loan at Bramall Lane. Having played a crucial role in the Blades being promoted to the Premier League last term, the 22-year-old has been hugely influential once again this time around.

Henderson has missed just one league match – against parent club Manchester United. During that time he’s helped Chris Wilder’s side to the second best defensive record in the division behind only leaders Liverpool.

This form has led many to tip him to make Gareth Southgate’s England squad for Euro 2020. Some even think Henderson should be his country’s number one at the tournament.

What this also means is that the goalkeeper could be playing himself into a role at Old Trafford. Current Red Devils first choice, David de Gea, made another costly mistake at the weekend in the 1-1 draw at Everton.

It was the seventh error that has led directly to a goal De Gea has made in 2019/20. No ‘keeper in the top flight has made more.

Man United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, spoke about the future of Henderson following the game at Goodison Park. It is becoming increasingly unlikely that the Blades will be able to keep the highly rated stopper in the long term.

What about Ramsdale as an alternative for Sheffield United?

Ramsdale came through the Blades academy after being released by Bolton Wanderers. He was promoted to the first team by Chris Wilder shortly after he was named boss in 2016.

Still in League One at the time, when Premier League Bournemouth offered around £1m for the 21-year-old in January 2017, it was understandably accepted.

Since then Wilder’s side have joined the Cherries in the top flight. Ramsdale has also risen through the ranks and made his debut against the Blades on the opening day of this season.

The England Under-21 international has played all but one of Bournemouth’s 27 league matches since. While the Dorest side have struggled, Ramsdale has impressed.

Which is why he could be a great alternative if a deal to bring back Henderson is off. This could be made easier if the Cherries are relegated back to the Championship. They are currently third from bottom and in the drop zone.
