A win for Sheffield United at West Ham can be so much more than three points

As Sheffield United travel to West Ham this evening, there’s no beating about the bush when it comes to the fact the Blades need results.

Draws will no longer do in the main. 15 games remain. United need to win at least eight of those to give themselves a fighting chance. The Blades also need the likes of Newcastle, Brighton, and Burnley to stop picking up results along the way as well.

But while three points are important and are what are going to drag the Blades towards an unlikely survival, winning at West Ham tonight can give United a huge psychological boost.

That boost can come in the form of the Blades climbing off the bottom of the table. Something has seemed so unlikely for so long this season is now within sight after West Brom failed to bet Manchester United.

And that, could prove another huge turning point for the Blades.

Climbing off the bottom huge for Sheffield United

While a win at West Ham would still leave the Blades 11 points behind fourth from bottom Newcastle, it would offer a glimmer of light.

Another win against Fulham could put the gap to single points. Again, that would be another huge boost mentally for Chris Wilder and his troops.

But moving off the bottom and into 19th is the big one. It gets the monkey off the back of the players in terms of being the ‘worst’ team in the league. Not that we are, not by a long way when you watch West Brom’s performances under Sam Allardyce, who is looking somewhat dated in his approach.

Rest assured, in no way is tonight’s game an easy one. Most Blades would probably take a point given West Ham’s form. But a win, however it comes along, could be absolutely massive in the Blades’ relegation fight.
