Some legendary goalkeepers have defended Dean Henderson following his mistake against Liverpool.

Henderson allowed a Georginio Wijnaldum shot to squirm through his legs as Sheffield United lost 1-0 to the Reds.

Blades manager Chris Wilder was critical of the on loan Manchester United stopper after the game. Henderson made a similarly costly blunder against Leeds United last season.

“If he wants to be a professional footballer and play at the top level, these things are going to happen,” Wilder told Match Of The Day.

“Mistakes are going to happen. He made a couple last year and came flying back.

“I’m not going to put my arm around him. He wants to play at the highest level, he wants to play for Manchester United, he wants to play for England. He’s got to do a bit better, he’s got to concentrate a bit more.”

While Wilder was less than understanding of his ‘keeper, two legends in the position have backed the England Under-21 international.

Former Arsenal star David Seaman wrote on Twitter:

Meanwhile, ex-Red Devils ace Peter Schmeichel added:

Henderson is unlikely to let this setback affect him too much. The 22-year-old has a huge amount of self belief and bounced back quickly following that Leeds gaffe in 2018/19.

He will also continue to be the established number one at Bramall Lane. Simon Moore has been used in the Carabao Cup, while Michael Verrips was signed this summer.

However, neither has as much potential or talent as Henderson.
