‘What I’ve heard’: Carl Asaba says 27-year-old was desperate to join Sheffield United in January

Sheffield United take on Luton Town tomorrow and Mason Holgate will be looking for a far better day than his debut against Aston Villa.

Holgate was part of a back three that shipped five goals at home to the Villans and it was a nightmare debut really for the Everton man.

However, Holgate will hope to bounce back and show everyone just why he was signed in the first place.

And speaking about Holgate to SUTV, Sheffield United pundit and former striker, Carl Asaba, has backed the Everton loanee to come good.

“The manager’s identified him and I think the club have wanted him for a long time because he has the attributes for the way we want to play. Yeah, he’s a good signing and hopefully he’ll get up to speed as quickly as possible. From what I’ve heard about Mason Holgate was that he’s been adamant that he wanted to come and he’s made the effort and had his agent work to make it happen. That’s the type of person we want in and someone who is up for the challenge,” Asaba said.

Holgate is unlucky but desire is there

You have to be fair to the likes of Mason Holgate and Ben Brereton-Diaz. They’ve signed on loan in a team that is basically already down, so you have to credit the desire a bit there.

Asaba’s comments on what he’d heard about Holgate wanting to sign are interesting here. It shows the player himself wanted the move and that might bode well for keeping him in the summer.

Ultimately, Holgate’s arrival was met with negativity from a lot of Blades – especially on the dreaded social media platforms. But, he has Premier League experience and quality and if he can perform half decent, then he could prove a good signing both shorter and longer term if he comes back.
