Talksport pundit names Jack O'Connell above Aston Villa man for England call

Talksport pundit, Adrian Durham, has spoken of how he believes Jack O’Connell to be one of the top English centre-halves.

Durham was debating with Darren Bent about how much he rates Aston Villa defender, Tyrone Mings. The Villa star has recently been involved with the England set-up, ahead of the likes of O’Connell.

Talksport’s Durham is known for making controversial comments and speaking his mind. And when discussing Mings’ potential, he was quick to name seven defenders who he believes are better.

Among those seven names, was Blades star, Jack O’Connell. Despite not being called up by Gareth Southgate just yet, O’Connell has impressed throughout the season for United.

He’s helped the Blades to seven clean sheets and has continued to overlap as he did in the Championship. In fact, O’Connell has yet to even miss a minute of Premier League football for the Blades this term.

It is that consistency what has led many to call for O’Connell to be given the nod by Gareth Southgate.

Who else did Adrian Durham name as better than Mings?

Durham was pretty quick to name his list of defenders. As well as O’Connell, he named former Sheffield United loanee and current Wolves captain, Conor Coady.

Others on the list were Fikayo Tomori, John Stones, Harry Maguire, Joe Gomez, and Lewis Dunk.

Fellow pundit Darren Bent agreed with most of Durham’s list, including the inclusion of O’Connell, although he did dispute whether Coady and Stones were better than Mings.

A call-up not far off for O’Connell

If the Blades defender can maintain his level of performance then there’s no reason why Southgate won’t call him up.

As well as being a brilliant defender, he’s also keen to learn and improve. Furthermore, O’Connell can also play left-back if needed, with the system at Bramall Lane teaching him when to attack and defend in equal measure.

When the England call does eventually come, there won’t be a pundit in football who begrudges the Blades star his moment.
