Steve McManaman 'baffled' by Sheffield United's decision not to attack Granit Xhaka

Sheffield United suffered another miserable loss and another woeful night at the office as Arsenal simply strolled in, then out, of Bramall Lane with an easy three points.

The Blades were simply shocking. So many times on here we have tried to find positives in our season and performances but this tonight was a shocker.

From one to eleven, the players simply did not look bothered. The sooner this season comes to an end, the better, frankly.

Even against a weakened Arsenal side who didn’t have the likes of Odegaard, Aubameyang, and Gabriel, the Blades could do nothing.

The Gunners even opted to play Granit Xhaka at left-back and that was one thing that BT Sport commentator, Steve McManaman picked up on. Indeed, the former Liverpool man was baffled by United’s decision not to target him.

“I don’t understand it at all. It’s baffling. I’m really surprised they’ve not tried to attack down this side a bit more” McManaman remarked on commentary, before being backed up by Darren Fletcher on comms.

Xhaka arguably had his most comfortable night of the season so far and will put his feet up on the M1 back down south almost feeling he’s not played.

An embarrassing night at the Lane for Sheffield United

Unacceptable, this. Arsenal were there to be got at and simply sauntered to the easiest of victories.

Yes, they showed some nice touches at times but the effort, intensity, and performance level of Sheffield United was something we have not become accustomed to seeing. Or maybe we have, and that’s the problem?

Unfortunately, this team faces a long way back if it fancies coming back up from the Championship. Big changes are needed this summer.
