Sheffield United star in esteemed company as Alan Shearer names him in his latest team of the week

Sheffield United might not have got the three points they might have deserved at the weekend but Alan Shearer was impressed with one player.

The Blades blew a 3-1 lead to allow Fulham to come back and rescue a point in a game that really should have been put to bed.

Indeed, had Oli McBurnie’s goal to make it 4-1 stood, then you can imagine the game would have ended in a Blades win.

In the end, it wasn’t to be for United and Chris Wilder.

But in a small token of appreciation towards the performance, Alan Shearer has included one Sheffield United player in his latest team of the week.

Of course, the man Shearer has picked is loan star, Ben Brereton Diaz.

The Chilean has been absolutely brilliant since signing on loan from Villarreal and but for him getting injured, United might actually have a few more points on the board.

Brereton-Diaz scored twice and set another up at the weekend and while the TOTW from Shearer was dominated by the likes of Newcastle and Arsenal players, Shearer found room for the Blades ace.

“Fulham struggled to handle him. Two goals and an assist should have won Sheffield United the points,” Shearer said.

Brereton-Diaz has four goals in five games for United now and looks every bit the player the club needed to replace Iliman Ndiaye.

Blades should throw the cheque-book at Villarreal to sign Ben Brereton-Diaz

Make no mistake, this is a player who is easily good enough for the Premier League and if he can be signed for the Championship, then even better.

We all saw at Blackburn Rovers how good Brereton-Diaz can be and he’s now showing that for United.

It’s such a shame he is only a loan player and even more of a shame that he wasn’t someone we signed in the summer window. Granted, he might not have been available but the difference in quality compared to the rest of the summer signings is massive.

If there is some money to spend this summer then United need to splash it on Brereton-Diaz. If we go down and he signs, he gives us a massive chance at promotion back to the top flight.

Other clubs will likely fancy taking a punt on him now. But United need to put their name in the mix and hope he fancies coming back for a second spell.
