Sheffield United set Manchester United deadline for signing Dean Henderson

Sheffield United have set Manchester United a deadline for signing Dean Henderson.

The Sheffield Star reports that the Blades want the deal concluded before Henderson leaves for the European Under-21 Championships.

The goalkeeper has been included in England’s squad. They begin their campaign with their first group match against France on June 18.

Chris Wilder is keen to re-sign Henderson before he jets off to the tournament in Italy and San Marino.

That is partly because the Blades themselves head abroad in early July for warm weather training in Portugal.

However, Wilder acknowledges that the Red Devils will decide how quickly negotiations take place. The future of Henderson is unlikely to be high on their list of transfer priorities.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is open to the 22-year-old returning to Bramall Lane on loan. Yet the club may want to negotiate a new contract for Henderson before he departs.

The young stopper may still have to link up late with Wilder’s men for pre-season, depending on how the Three Lions get on at the Euros. The final takes place on June 30, just days before the Blades fly to Portugal.

Henderson had hoped to be involved in the senior England setup, but manager Gareth Southgate wants the best youngsters available to the Under-21s.

Southgate told U21s boss Aidy Boothroyd to select his strongest squad to give the Three Lions the best chance of doing well in a group that also contains Croatia and Romania.

It means the likes of Henderson and Manchester City’s Phil Foden will not be involved in upcoming Nations League games. Instead, Southgate and his staff will watch them at the Euros.

Henderson could then be called up for Euro 2020 qualifiers, which begin in September. By then he may have begun the new Premier League season with the Blades.
