Javier Pereira was considered as the next manager of Sheffield United, according to TEAMtalk.
Currently in charge of Chinese Super League side Henan Jianye, Pereira was among those the Blades board were looking at to succeed Chris Wilder.
Slavisa Jokanovic has since got the job, signing a three-year contract at Bramall Lane.
Yet Yorkshire Live speculates that Pereira could still be coming to United.
That’s because the 55-year-old is a long-time compatriot of Jokanovic’s. Pereira worked as the Serbian’s assistant at Watford, Maccabi Tel Aviv and Fulham.
The pair achieved promotion from the Championship together on two occasions.
Pereira was actually first brought to English football by Oscar Garcia when he was named as Hornets boss.
But when Jokanovic succeeded Garcia at Vicarage Road the two of them struck up a solid working relationship.
It’s this that could tempt Pereira to come back to England.
Javier Pereira to Sheffield United?
Jokanovic is yet to confirm who will be in his backroom staff since taking the Blades role.
When Wilder left the club in March, his own trusted number two remained.
The Sheffield Star later reported that Alan Knill rejected the offer of technical director, but is still at the South Yorkshire side – for the time being at least.
However, Knill’s future at United remains uncertain. As does Jason Tindall’s, who was brought in to help Paul Heckingbottom when he became caretaker following the departure of Wilder.
It would therefore be unsurprising if Jokanovic looked to bring in his own assistant. If the Blades were to land two managerial candidates to lead them next season, that certainly wouldn’t be a bad outcome.
It now remains to be seen whether Pereira wants to give up being number one to work alongside Jokanovic once more.
