Sheffield United interested in Atletico Madrid's Matt Doherty

Sheffield United have had their transfer embargo lifted and are apparently keen on signing Irish right-back, Matt Doherty.

The Blades have already been linked with Kyle Walker this week and it seems another right-back is now being mentioned in Doherty.

According to 90Min, United are keen on bringing Doherty in during the summer. Having left Tottenham for Atletico Madrid, the Irishman has had a torrid time of things and is now free to leave again this upcoming summer.

United, along with the likes of Crystal Palace, Burnley, and Wolves are all thought to be keen on landing Doherty.

Why Chelsea FINALLY Turned A Corner.

Tottenham paid £15m for Doherty back in the summer of 2020. However, he never really got fully going and fell foul of a number of managerial changes at Spurs.

He moved to Atletico for nothing in January but his time in Madrid has been disappointing. He is now expected to be allowed to move back to England, with a host of clubs keen.

Lauded by Dejan Kulusevski as being a ‘fantastic’ player for his skills at right-back, Doherty boasts a wealth of experience. The 31-year-old has more than 30 caps for Ireland and made over 300 appearances for Wolves before moving to Tottenham.

Sheffield United News View: Doherty could be viable option

While the signing of Kyle Walker might be a bit unrealistic at the moment, the idea of signing a player like Matt Doherty is one that could be entertained.

Of course, he has a lot of other interest and there’s a reason for that. But United are right to put themselves in the mix here and it makes sense.

Jayden Bogle has been below his usual standards this term and while George Baldock is ever reliable, Doherty has that Premier League and international experience. Further, he’s also excellent going forward.

In terms of free transfers, this is one Sheffield United could potentially look at doing.
