Sheffield United goalkeeper Wes Foderingham has asked Chris Wilder if he can leave the club ahead of the deadline on Thursday.

Foderingham has been United’s number one since Paul Heckingbottom was in charge but new manager Wilder moved to sign Ivo Grbic last week. Since then, Wilder has given Grbic his debut and also confirmed he’ll be the number one going forward.

Foderingham, of course, hasn’t signed a new contract and is effectively free to go in the summer now.

And speaking to The Sheffield Star today, manager Wilder has confirmed that Foderingham has indeed asked if he can leave Bramall Lane this week.

Wes Foderingham asks to leave Sheffield United

Confirming he has spoken to Foderingham all along about his situation, Wilder has said that the stopper has asked if there’s a chance of a loan move before Thursday’s deadline.

“Wes asked the question whether he would be available to go out on loan. I said: ‘Let’s see what happens; see who comes to the table and we will discuss everything.’ I was up front with Wes, as I always have been in terms of what we were doing with Ivo. I am not going to leave ourselves light so I have to make sure that department is well stocked,” Wilder said.

“I have put myself out there and said that Ivo is going to be the number one, if you buy an experienced goalkeeper for a fee, on a three-and-a-half year deal, he is going to come in and be that number one. But injuries and suspensions can happen and I have to make sure we don’t leave ourselves light. We will see how that plays out.”

United take on Crystal Palace tomorrow in what is a must win game for Wilder and his team.

Anything other than three points will effectively end any hope of a remarkable survival charge.
