You’ll be hard-pressed to go out there and find a Sheffield United fan who doesn’t admire or downright love Chris Basham.
The Blades defender has become something of a cult-hero in recent times at Bramall Lane. Still with the club from the League One days, ‘Bash’ has cemented himself in club folklore with his superb displays from centre-back.
Basham has been integral to United deploying the ‘overlapping centre-backs’ that the Blades became famed for. Clubs across Europe have been copying Chris Wilder’s system, and Basham has been vital in its growth.
Today, as tweeted out by the club, marks seven years since Basham signed.
SAKA, ANTONY AND 10 PREMIER LEAGUE STARS HEADING TO THEIR FIRST WORLD CUP
In that time, Basham has been part of two promotions, a play-off defeat, and a stunning top ten finish in the Premier League. Per Transfermarkt, he’s racked up 317 appearances for United. Never the most prolific, he’s hit just the 15 goals, with 12 assists.
But Basham is so much more than goals and assists.
Sheffield United fans laud Chris Basham on Twitter
On Sheffield United News, we love Chris Basham. There’s no two ways about it. He’s easily one of our favourite players in the squad and he’ll go down a club legend.
But what does the rest of the fanbase think? Well, we posed the question to the Blades supporters via our Twitter account.
Unsurprisingly, the responses from United fans mirrored our thoughts. Basham, it seems, is a true club icon. Mentions of Bob Booker, the word ‘legend’, and ‘a top bloke’ were all in the replies.
Here, then, is a look at what the Sheffield United fans make of Chris Basham as he passed the seven-year mark at Bramall Lane.
He’s got better and better each year and I for one was one slagging signing him when we did but he has proved to be one of our first names on the teamsheet love bash always be one we will all love and miss when he’s gone

Right up there. What a player what a bloke. United Legend. With us through good and bad. Hope he finishes his career with us. https://t.co/KTOAff94Cw

He’s got Bob Booker vibes about him with his character and versatility but I think that does him a disservice; he’s more skilful than he’s given credit for. Knows his limits and doesn’t overcomplicate things. Absolute Blades legend, top ten in my lifetime. Love him. #Bashambauer

Bashambaur. !! Understated and modest. Underlap, overlap cruyff turn, bleeding from his head, heads off the line, rampaging runs, promotion train toot toot. Yes he’s okay 👌

He’s up there with Bob Booker for me… https://t.co/2PiEy5GtEY

Never the most technically gifted? You’re having a laugh. In 50 years time when I write about how we might have made Europe but got relegated the following season, Bash will be the 1st name of my list
