Report: Sheffield United facing 18-month transfer ban as takeover hangs in balance

Sheffield United are hoping their takeover goes smoothly in the coming weeks and it needs to happen quickly if the club is to get out of its current mess.

A £90m takeover from Nigerian business man Dozy Mmobuosi is said to be progressing. So far, there have been no issues with the EFL’s fit and proper persons tests.

However, the Daily Mail has reported this morning how questions have arose about Mmobuosi’s actual wealth. And even more worrying in the report is the mention of a potential 18-month transfer ban.

The Blades are currently under an embargo from the EFL for defaulting on payments. It’s believed United owe money to Liverpool for Rhian Brewster. However, a deal was believed to have been struck between Prince Abdullah and the new ownership on deadline day.

As yet, though, the club haven’t made a statement and it’s clear that the embargo is still there.

Should United fail to make the appropriate payment, then the Mail claims a further 18-month ban on transfers could come into force.

Naturally, this would seriously hinder Paul Heckingbottom’s side, especially if promotion was won. The Blades boss will be hoping for clarity on the matter ASAP as he looks to guide the Blades back up.

Sheffield United News View: Club is in real danger right now

Things might be ticking along nicely in the background at Sheffield United for all we know. But reading between the lines at the moment, you’d have to say things look worrying.

Little is known of the prospective new owner. And in fairness, he does seem to have put some money in already, which suggests funds are there.

However, the immediate issue is the embargo. An 18-month ban is a nightmare situation. If that is allowed to happen, then the Prince will be going out of the club in poor fashion.

Hopefully, the club makes some sort of statement this week. If not, then once again fans will be in limbo and sat waiting for bad news.
