Sheffield United appear to have moved quickly in the market to address their left-back options, with a move for Leicester’s Luke Thomas.
United have been decimated down the left after injuries to Max Lowe and Ben Osborn, while Rhys Norrington-Davies is still some way off a return from injury. New signing Yasser Larouci is not yet fully up to speed either.
And now, according to Football Insider, Paul Heckingbottom has moved quickly to beat Leeds United to the signing of Leicester’s Thomas.
Thomas missed the Leicester game last night and was expected to travel to Sheffield today to sort his medical and get things over the line.
The 22-year-old England under-21 star is expected to arrive on loan for the season. Coincidentally, he made his debut for Leicester against United in a game where Brendan Rodgers sung his praises.
“The thing when I look at young players is: “Do they have temperament?” You’ve seen how he sent the ball in – he wasn’t phased. He’s got that incredible composure,” Rodgers said at the time.
“It’s his first game playing against a really good team, he’s got great awareness. I thought over the course of the game he did so well. He defends, so aggressive and tenacious and he can pass the ball which is important for someone who plays me for me.
“He got a big round of applause from the team. It’s such an amazing night for him.”
Thomas was previously looked at by West Ham but at the time, the Hammers were quoted a huge £20m fee by Leicester.
Sheffield United News View: A great and smart signing
This is excellent business by United. Not only are we getting a top left-back with potential to get even better in the future, it’s not break the bank either.
However, we are still getting a player who more than Premier League quality and Thomas should thrive in that left wing-back slot for United.
The injuries remain a problem for Paul Heckingbottom right now and signing Thomas will feel like a huge relief.
