Manchester United legend Peter Schmeichel has given his opinion on whether Dean Henderson should be the club’s number one.

The debate has been going on for some time, with Henderson having greatly impressed on loan at Sheffield United over the past two seasons.

The 23-year-old played a key role in the Blades getting promoted from the Championship last year. Playing every minute of the campaign, Henderson kept more clean sheets than any other goalkeeper. He was also part of the division’s joint best defence.

It has been a similar story this term, with only Burnley’s Nick Pope having kept more clean sheets in the Premier League. Only Liverpool have a better defensive record than the Blades so far in 2019/20.

Does Schmeichel think Henderson should be Manchester United No.1?

Meanwhile, at Old Trafford, David de Gea is under increased scrutiny after a number of mistakes. Some believe that Henderson should replace the Spaniard as first choice.

Yet Schmeichel thinks that those people need a reality check.

“Would anyone seriously consider not having David De Gea in goal and put Dean Henderson in now?” the 56-year-old said on Instagram Live, as quoted by the Metro.

“There’s no doubt about Henderson’s potential. But he’s played one season at a club who has had an unbelievable run in the Premier League.

“Henderson will need to show another season, like he’s just come through, and then another one, and another one, in order to convince everyone that he is the right guy.

“There’s a really big difference between being the number one at Bramall Lane and being the number one at Old Trafford.”

Blades manager Chris Wilder has already admitted that the club are hoping to bring Henderson back on loan for a third year in a row.

Apparently the England Under-21 international is not prepared to stay with the Red Devils unless he is first choice. With De Gea under contract until 2023, that seems unlikely as things stand.

Therefore, a return to South Yorkshire seems possible. Especially if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer agrees with his old teammate Schmeichel about Henderson.
