Sheffield United are edging ever closer to an agreement with Roma and Aston Villa which will see Robin Olsen terminate his loan spell with the club earlier than expected.
Olsen, who has lost his place in the Sheffield United team to Wes Foderingham, is currently nearing a return to fitness after picking up an injury before Christmas. However, even if he is nearly fit, he won’t be in the squad this weekend for Derby as the Swede nears a move to Villa.
That’s according to Fabrizio Romano, who has taken to Twitter to confirm that Olsen is indeed on his way out.
Olsen, who is Sweden’s number one, was signed by Slavisa Jokanovic this summer. His arrival followed the big-money sale of Aaron Ramsdale to Arsenal. But on the whole, it has not worked for Olsen at all. A number of errors, coupled with Wes Foderingham stepping in to do better, has left United fans perplexed.

Ultimately, this will go down as one that didn’t work out for Olsen or United. Villa, meanwhile, will hope his experience will work well with Emi Martinez.
Our View: Wasn’t Meant To Be For Robin Olsen
Some accusations on social media that Olsen might not have cared, or wasn’t bothered, are perhaps harsh. At the end of the day he is an international stopper. He was part of a losing and struggling team under Jokanovic that never looked stable at the back.
Of course, Olsen was part of that defence, so must shoulder some blame. Also, given his experience and the wages he’ll be on, United fans are entitled to have wanted more overall. But, all in all, it will just have to be a lesson learned for everyone.
United will, hopefully, now have someone lined up to come in for Olsen. If not, Jake Eastwood could be given the chance to stake his claim to be the regular number two.
