Reported Sheffield United target Ashley Fletcher signs for Watford

One reported Sheffield United target, Ashley Fletcher, has penned a deal with newly-promoted Watford today.

The Hornets have confirmed the signing of the former Manchester United player. Fletcher, 25, had been with Middlesbrough but only managed to score twice throughout last season.

Fletcher’s name was mentioned in passing a few months ago in relation to the Blades. As reported at the time, FootballLeagueWorld claimed Fletcher was of interest to United.

However, the former Barnsley man has instead bagged himself a move back to the top-flight with the Hornets. Fletcher’s latest switch comes following spells with Sunderland and West Ham.

Fletcher has managed 21 goals in his 108 Championship appearances. The forward, who came through the ranks at Old Trafford, never quite getting to the prolific levels he might want.

Sheffield United News View: Don’t worry about Fletcher going to Watford

A move to United was always unlikely, anyway. The Blades have a number of forwards on the books as it is. And with Slavisa Jokanovic now in charge, any move for Fletcher was always a bit far-fetched.

In fact, a lot of Blades fans won’t have even noticed, so minor was the initial link with United.

Further, it’s not even worth getting worried about. Fletcher’s never been prolific anyway. His best spell came when he was with Barnsley, where he hit six in eleven.

Ultimately, there are bigger fish to fry for Sheffield United than Ashley Fletcher. Strikers are not the priority, for a start. And strikers who don’t have a good goal record are certainly not the priority.

Anyone coming into the club needs to be an improvement on what we already have. Really, it’s as simple as that, in terms of forwards.
