Sheffield United are said to be leading the race again for Terence Kongolo, with Football Insider claiming the Blades are looking to sign the Huddersfield defender.

Kongolo has emerged as a target for United in the last few days as Chris Wilder looks to bring in a replacement for Jack O’Connell, something the Blades boss confirmed following defeat to Arsenal today.

The Dutch international is expecting to leave Huddersfield but Fulham looked to be frontrunners for his signature ahead of the weekend following his loan spell last term at Craven Cottage.

But Football Insider’s latest report claims the Blades have now leapfrogged the Cottagers into pole position. However, Kongolo has a foot injury at the moment so that could prove a difficult deal given Wilder will want someone to slot in immediately for O’Connell.

Indeed, some reports across social media suggest that Kongolo has already failed a medical at Bramall Lane.

The 26-year-old was left out of the Huddersfield squad this weekend. He has played four times for Holland was a huge signing for the Terriers, who paid close to £18m for him back in 2018.

A defender is needed but Wilder has options

The Blades boss has openly admitted he has asked about Kongolo but on that line, he has also said he has a number of players in mind to fill the left centre-back void.

Kongolo is a class act with Premier League experience but his injury is a worry. But if it’s nothing too serious and he can be back after the break, then he could be a fine signing.

Tall, quick, and capable on the ball, Kongolo does fit the mould of a left centre-back in a back three. But, as with all reported targets, it remains to be seen if this deal will get over the line.
